How to upgrade diamond gear to netherite in Minecraft

To make a Netherite Pickaxe, put a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template, Diamond Pickaxe, and Netherite Ingot into a Smithing Table. The same process works for diamond armor and other diamond tools.

Gather the upgrade materials

For one pickaxe upgrade, gather one Diamond Pickaxe, one Netherite Ingot, and one Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template. If you don’t have a smithing table, make one with two iron ingots and four planks.

Find an upgrade template in Bastion Remnant chests in the Nether. See the template page for the chest locations. Make sure you pick up a Netherite Upgrade template; an armor-trim template won’t work.

Make an ingot and copy your template

Smelt Ancient Debris into Netherite Scrap. Combine four scraps with four Gold Ingots to make one netherite ingot. Use the smelting guide if you need help with the furnace step.

Copy the upgrade template before using your last one if you want to upgrade more equipment. Combine one existing template, seven diamonds, and one netherrack to produce two templates. You’ll have one to use and one to copy again.

Upgrade your gear

1. Place the Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template in the left input slot.
2. Place the diamond equipment in the middle input slot.
3. Place the netherite ingot in the right input slot.
4. Check the output, then take it. The template and ingot are consumed, and the diamond equipment becomes its netherite version.

Your gear keeps its enchantments and custom name. Existing damage carries over too, so don’t count on the upgrade as a repair. Use an anvil for repairs and adding enchanted books.

Why is there no netherite output?

Check the three slots: a Netherite Upgrade template, a piece of diamond gear, and a netherite ingot. Iron gear won’t work, and neither will a netherite scrap in place of the ingot.

Older instructions may show only a diamond item and an ingot. Current upgrading also needs the netherite upgrade template.
