To unlock level-30 enchantments, place 15 ordinary Bookshelves around an Enchanting Table, leaving a clear one-block gap. Reach experience level 30 and bring three Lapis Lazuli for the highest offer. Selecting that offer spends three levels, not all 30. You can also apply an Enchanted Book using an Anvil.

Gather the materials
- One enchanting table: four obsidian, two diamonds, and one book.
- Fifteen ordinary bookshelves: 90 planks and 45 books in total, separate from the table’s book.
- An unenchanted, enchantable item, lapis lazuli, and enough experience levels for the offer.
Each Book needs three paper and one leather. For the shelves alone, that’s 135 paper and 45 leather. Follow the pickaxe guide if you still need diamonds or a tool that can mine obsidian.

Place 15 Bookshelves around the table, with one block of space between the table and shelves. Shelves can be at table height or one block higher. Keep that gap clear so the shelves can power the table. Ordinary bookshelves provide enchanting power; Chiseled Bookshelves do not.
With 15 valid shelves, the highest offer requires experience level 30. Adding more shelves won’t unlock higher-level offers.
This setup uses a single layer of 15 bookshelves at table height. The stone-brick floor is optional:
The bottom-center opening is the entrance. There are five shelves along the back, three on each side, and four along the front: 15 total. Keep the gap between the shelves and table clear. If you raise shelves by one block, keep the space above the gap clear too.
Why can’t I get level-30 enchantments?
Count the shelves and check their positions against the layout above. Remove decorations from the gap between the shelves and table. Shelves that are too far away won’t count.
A Chiseled Bookshelf stores books but does not power an enchanting table. Use ordinary bookshelves even if the chiseled ones are full. Even with the right setup, a level-30 offer won’t guarantee the enchantment you want or its highest level.
Enchant an item
- Place an unenchanted, enchantable item or a Book in the left slot.
- Add Lapis Lazuli to the other slot.
- Choose an offer you have enough levels for. The three rows cost 1, 2, or 3 levels and the same number of lapis lazuli.
- Take the result and check all its enchantments. You may get extra enchantments beyond the one shown in the preview.
A level-30 offer consumes 3 levels, so you need to be level 30 to select it but normally finish at level 27. Completing an enchantment changes your offers.
Choose an enchantment
The enchantment list shows what each enchantment does, which items it works on, and where to get it. Some enchantments are unavailable at the enchanting table. An item may also accept an enchantment through an anvil even when that enchantment is not offered directly on that item.
