How to use straw beds without changing your spawn point

Updated

Take a straw bed along when you want to sleep through the night and keep your respawn point at home. Each bed lasts for one use: it breaks when you get up, even if you leave before morning.

Craft four straw beds

Put three hay bales in a horizontal row in a crafting table to make four straw beds. Each hay bale takes nine wheat, so a batch costs 27 wheat.

Craft Straw Bed

A stack holds 16 straw beds. Look for extras inside Abandoned Camps, both on the ground and in barrels.

If you place one in the wrong spot, break it and pick it up before sleeping in it. A hoe is the quickest tool for the job.

Sleep without moving your spawn point

  1. Find a spot in the Overworld with room for both halves of the bed.
  2. Place it and get in at night or during a thunderstorm.
  3. Wait until morning. The bed breaks when you get up, with nothing to pick back up.

If you get the “monsters nearby” message, deal with them or move the bed before sleeping. On a server, you may also have to wait for other players to get into bed.

For a new respawn point or a villager breeding setup, you’ll still need a regular bed, such as a white bed.
