# Concrete stairs and slabs in Minecraft

Canonical: https://crafting.recipes/guides/concrete-stairs-slabs

Minecraft 26.3.

Updated September 20, 2026

Start with solid concrete to make [concrete stairs](/items/white-concrete-stairs.md) or [slabs](/items/white-concrete-slab.md) in any of the 16 colors. Use a stonecutter to save concrete when making stairs.

## Turn powder into concrete

Combine four [sand](/items/sand.md), four [gravel](/items/gravel.md), and one dye to make eight blocks of concrete powder. The arrangement doesn’t matter. You’ll need regular sand for this recipe; red sand won’t work.

1. Place the powder against flowing water or a water source. It hardens into concrete immediately.
2. Collect it with a [pickaxe](/guides/pickaxe.md). You’ll need a pickaxe to collect concrete stairs and slabs too.
3. Bring the concrete to a crafting table or stonecutter.

The powder needs to touch the water itself. Rain and cauldrons won’t work, and neither will the solid back of a waterlogged stair. On a waterlogged block, aim for the side where the water is exposed.

Choose your dye before making the powder. Once the concrete is made, you’ll need a new batch to get a different color.

## Craft stairs and slabs

Arrange six matching concrete blocks in a stair pattern to make four stairs.

For slabs, place three matching concrete blocks in a horizontal row. This makes six slabs.

## When does a stonecutter save materials?

Put a concrete block in a [stonecutter](/items/stonecutter.md), then select stairs or slabs. One block makes one stair or two slabs.

| Output | Crafting table | Stonecutter |
| - | - | - |
| 4 stairs | 6 concrete | 4 concrete |
| 6 slabs | 3 concrete | 3 concrete |
